History
The concept of a distributed timestamp server was pioneered by the bitcoin developers in 2008 and subsequently published as a wiki page in January 2009 by Satoshi Nakamoto. The wiki page was entitled "Double Spending", or "Defeating the Counterfeit Coin Problem" and was written in Japanese.: 151 In the same month the blockchain was proposed by Satoshi Nakamoto, who published the white paper on bitcoin the following month.: ch. On 3 January 2009, Nakamoto mined the first block of the blockchain, known as the genesis block. The genesis block is considered the origin block of the blockchain. The blockchain has no central leader. The peer-to-peer network modifies the protocol as necessary to encourage decentralization.

The blockchain protocol as described in the white paper has certain properties that distinguish it from earlier forms of timestamping, namely in its innovation of the proof-of-work system. The proof-of-work system forces participants to invest computational power in order to verify a set of rules. However, once the computational power is used up, and cannot be used again, the miner is rewarded with the new set of rules, in essence, gaining a free lunch. The computational power used to write a block must be "more than just the normal difficulty level at the time." If the computational power were not greater, then miners could "simply mine empty blocks.": ch. The white paper also notes that proof-of-stake "has some hurdles to jump before it becomes a widespread consensus algorithm" as it has a "small difference between the best block and subsequent blocks" resulting in validation of stale data.

Scott Stornetta., followed in 2012 by research and development efforts into other timestamping platforms based upon Bitcoin's blockchain, including Marbles and Chronos.: ch.

Many alternative blockchains have been developed that implement the concept of a timestamp server; these include the NXT and PeerCoin blockchains.

In addition, various software companies have independently developed incompatible timestamp services; one that allows for validation of non-genesis blocks is Blockstack, an independently created blockchain network that implements the concept of a database for financial transactions.: 217 Its creator believes that it could act as a replacement for blockchain services such as Bitcoin and Litecoin.:  ch.
