History
The first block was mined on September 17, 2008, at 17:43:21 UTC by Satoshi Nakamoto, with a block reward of 50 bitcoins. As of June 2015, the total number of bitcoins in existence is 18,176,395.[1] In January 2017, the value of a bitcoin exceeded $10,000 for the first time ever, making bitcoin prices skyrocket by over 1,400% in seven months.[2]

Usage

Blockchain is a digital or virtual record of exchange that allows a network of computers to validate and timestamp transactions in a distributed timestamp server operated in a decentralized fashion.

It also improves the efficiency of clearing and settling financial transactions. In the early 2010s, it became apparent that there would be a massive increase in consumer demand for a cryptocurrency. Satoshi Nakamoto described Bitcoin as the first ever cryptocurrency and he envisioned it to become a currency used as an alternative to traditional government-issued currency.

The rapid growth of Bitcoin and acceptance of the idea of cryptocurrencies in the mainstream world increased confidence in the blockchain technology and interest in the cryptographic principles which underlie blockchain.

In October 2013, a blockchain platform for the exchange and trade of digital assets known as Ethereum was described as "the Turing complete programming language for a blockchain".

In December 2013, American technology giant Oracle Corporation announced a partnership with Digital Currencies Group to develop blockchain as a tool for secure, open and reliable supply chains.

In December 2013, Genesis Mining announced a partnership with Goldman Sachs to develop a framework for using blockchain technology in the real world.

In December 2013, IBM announced that blockchain technology is the foundation for a new business. The Wall Street Journal reported that IBM partnered with Digital Currencies Group to develop "a blockchain platform".

Security

Satoshi Nakamoto, an individual or group of individuals, is widely considered to be the unknown or anonymous creator of bitcoin and cypherpunk movement, with the term Nakamoto Consensus being used to refer to the consensus mechanism used in the bitcoin network. Several researchers have proposed they can identify the real identity of Nakamoto, including Newsweek in its April 2012 issue that placed the name and image of him on the cover, and Wired
