At least 14 civilians and around 45 policemen have been killed in the past three days in south Yemen, where an insurgency has been running for more than two years.

On Friday night, nine people were killed in a series of explosions at Aden airport, including three civilians and six policemen, while one civilian, three policemen and two soldiers died in an attack on a security compound in Aden.

On Sunday, another policeman and a civilian were killed and six others wounded in a blast at a checkpoint in the southern province of Shabwa.

The recent deadly attacks have been carried out by the country's al Houthi movement and forces loyal to ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh, as they step up their operations to dislodge UN-backed President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi and his government.

Tensions in Aden have been running high since Thursday, when gunmen shot dead three policemen at a police post near the airport.

The dead policemen were named as Ramez Yaqoub, Khaled al Qadi and Omar al Isawi.

Mr Hadi's Popular Resistance forces called for calm on Saturday, but his supporters demonstrated in the city, demanding they end Saleh's government.

Militants fired shells at the base of the presidency and police officers' quarters and security forces also fired at them, witnesses and reports said.

One security officer was killed and four people, including a child, injured, reports said.

Pro-presidential supporters said they had called for peaceful protests.

State news said the government had provided emergency aid for the wounded.

Security forces had also seized ammunition and rockets from the attackers, reports said.

Mr Hadi was not in the city on Saturday.

He is in Saudi Arabia for medical treatment, and was not in Aden on Friday, leaving it to a spokesman to declare that "it's safe" in the capital.

His party took control of the south in February, after Saleh ordered Yemeni forces to withdraw.
