Blocks and transactions in the blockchain are not publicly readable. The digital signatures required for participation in Bitcoin (via "wallet software") are based on a public key rather than a private key, so anyone can create addresses and sign transactions. The owner of a given address can "spend" its bitcoins, so long as they are owned solely by that address. Although the blockchain is public, it is not designed to be publicly readable, and gives no links to other transactions or wallets; the private keys of participating nodes within the Bitcoin network are kept entirely separate from the blockchain. Researchers, for example, may use the blockchain as a protocol for tracking transactions between different users; they do not obtain private keys directly from any of the system participants.

They can be installed on multiple devices, allowing users to carry on multiple transactions off line as well as online. Simple spending of bitcoins is enabled on these wallet applications, with fewer features available for advanced features (mining, trading, and exchange). For sending or receiving large amounts of money, one may use specialized Bitcoin exchanges, although it is possible to also use local money transfer services with bitcoins in the privacy of their own office, although some may require a fee to withdraw.

The ledger can be displayed on a personal computer, a smartphone or a tablet. Wallet applications are typically available for each of these devices. Wallet interfaces will vary based on the device being used.

Blockchain.info uses a sidechain model that consists of long threads of linked blocks, where the blocks of the mainchain and the sidechains are created at different times. For example, the mainchain is created when a particular transaction is broadcast, while the sidechains are only created when blocks are needed. The sidechains are independent chains, that are only used for certain purposes, and are often referred to as "child chains".
