Pada awalnya, istilah ini digunakan sebagai nama julukan untuk berbagai entitas yang menantang kepercayaan iman manusia di dalam Alkitab Ibrani. Sejak saat itu agama-agama Samawi menggunakan istilah "Satan" sebagai nama untuk Iblis. Di dalam bahasa Indonesia, istilah Satan berbeda maknanya dengan setan. "Satan" (huruf besar) lebih condong pada sang Iblis (diabolos), sedangkan "setan" (huruf kecil) lebih condong kepada roh-roh jahat (daemon). Perubahan makna itu terjadi karena setan tidak diterjemahkan langsung dari bahasa Ibrani, melainkan melalui bahasa Arab, sehingga terjadi pergeseran makna.Tugas Demonology
