Avanos Medical recalls Cortrak*2 EAS in the wake of reports of injury and death due to tube malfunctions.
The US Food and Drug Administration has acknowledged the Cortrak*2 of Avanos Medical's Enal Access System Recall (EAS) in a Class I recall.
A Class I Recall is the most serious type out of the three classes.
Avanos Medical recalls Cortrak*2 EAS following reports of injuries and deaths due to misplacements of nasogastric or nasoenteric tubes.
The device is designed to help health care workers put medical feed tubes for patients.
But, improperly installed nasogastric/nasoenteric pipe can cause damage to the vocal cords, or trachea. This could result in severe injuries, or even death.

The company recall communication stated that 60 patients were injured and 23 died due to misplacement in nasogastric tubes while making use of Cortrak* 2 EAS.
Following the recall Avanos Medical will update the device's labelling. This includes updating the instructions and intended applications of Cortrak* 2 EAS.
Users are also directed to ensure that the tubes are put in the correct manner according to the guidelines of the institution prior to utilize them.
