Work-Wear - Health and Safety Issues For Women in the US Construction Industry
In the United States the responsibility for safe practices issues on the job comes within the remit in the United States Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). In the construction industry there's input provided by the Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health (ACCSH), an independent committee which offers yet another viewpoint to OSHA on construction issues of safety. Usually whenever a risk assessment may be done and it has been decided PPE is necessary for your workers little thought moved to the following consideration:
· Is it suitable and appropriate to the risks involved and to the environment in which it will probably be used?
· Does it prevent or adequately control the risks involved without increasing the overall amount of risk?
· Has the state of health of the employees who is going to be wearing the PPE been considered?
· What will be the needs of the job along with the demands it places on the wearer, for example restricted vision, how long the PPE must be worn and the physical demands the PPE places around the wearer?
· Can the right a higher level training be provided at the appropriate time?
If these basic questions was asked there would not need been the outcry 20 years ago from many women within the construction industry in the US, certainly women of Chicago (CWIT - Chicago Women In Trades) and those women making their voices heard in NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety). Unfortunately, check that of the issues they raised then have yet to be addressed satisfactorily. In regard to PPE women complained that there were few if any smaller sizes available - thinking about the first point within the above list as well as the second and the fourth points too, this complaint could easily be addressed if comfort and fit ended up on the mind in the company buyer responsible for PPE.
Outsize clothing is at itself a hazard! Yet employers felt we were holding meeting the industry standards understanding that the women were whining on 'fashion/fit' grounds in lieu of on occupational safety. Clothing or equipment that isn't sized, or does not fit, properly can compromise personal safety. It also may not function effectively inside manner in which it turned out designed. The report stated that, "Poor fit compromises the security provided by the garment or equipment. The lack of appropriate PPC and PPE might cause serious safe practices risks for females, and men of smaller sizes, who depend upon protective clothing and equipment to enable them to keep safe.
Having inadequate or ill-fitting clothing, boots, gloves, or safety equipment presents a safety hazard for any worker." It seems there continues to be little effort to consider smaller physique of females along with the dimensions for safety workwear like ear, head, and face protection in women's sizes. Footwear and gloves were often inadequate or even in right for female workers in construction, which can be because of unavailability (ie, manufacturers don't make or distributors don't stock), limited availability, or lack of understanding among employers and workers about where equipment made for a ladies structure can be had. It is not a good enough excuse.
