Minecrafter Creates a Giant Halo ring that actually Freaking Spins

Home News Survival Minecraft Minecrafter creates a massive Halo ring that actually freaking spins

Published by Lauren Morton, 4 January 22.

You will need to modify it, but you can still download it and play around with it.

A world made of cubes can't do circles. But a lot of Minecraft players love to defy logic to build impressive circular structures. One brave builder has gone further, throwing every rule of the game out the window to build a ring that rotates. Yes, an entire rotating Halo ring that includes various biomes, a beam emitter, and an exploding Pelican. Best of all, you can download and play with the ring yourself.

The Minecraft YouTuber called Reach claims that his Halo ring was initially inspired by a build shared by another creator. Although this smaller ring world is impressive, the comments on the post suggested that it would be even more impressive if it actually worked. Reach tackled the challenge using WorldEdit and Create to design and create an actual ring that moves.

It was a significant undertaking. To control the movement of the ring it was used the Clockwork Bearing blocks from the Create mod. It turned out that the single clockwork bearing located at the edge of the ring's rim could not do the job. "The first time I tried to make it move and it didn't render due to the entity that was generated being too large for Minecraft to handle," he explains.

Reach decided to break it down into four sections with an axis bearing that rotates, and an arm. Reach ended up with eight bearings attached to the sections of the ring as spokes. "I did think it wasn't going to work," he tells me, "but my stubbornness and wanting to make something unique for YouTube and my viewers was enough to get me through." After all that? Holy hell, the thing is moving.

Planet Minecraft has the project available for download if wish to experience the beauty of an ethereal world-like ring. It's required to run on Minecraft version 1.16 and a few other mods: Forge and Create, Flywheel, and some custom Halo textures if you like. Once inside, you'll manually start up the bearings to get the thing going, but after you're on the ground, it will continue to tick.

It doesn't whirl around constantly, so you won’t be able to keep up with the hamster wheel that spins forever. The whole ring turns in increments of about 30 seconds. It was a good thing because I felt feeling a bit disoriented and motion sick exploring it. It will take me a little longer to build my space legs. Reach had to secure every block together to spin the ring correctly, so you won’t be able to build or build mine here. It's a diorama that's more than a playable environment however it's still a very cool.

You can hear some more of the design process of Reach in his YouTube video below, where he explains the difficulties of designing the ring, and the different decorative choices he made during the construction to give the whole thing a Halo feel.

God bless the Minecraft builders. They never give up.
