Minecraft Developer Mojang will not Allow NFTs And Blockchain Tech

The company released an article on its blog entitled "Minecraft and NFTs" and acknowledged that some creators and companies have started launching NFT projects associated with Minecraft world skin packs and files. The post suggested that Minecraft creators could use the game to create and sell collectible NFTs. keep calm and say ‘arrr’ These NFTs could be earned through the activities on the Minecraft server, or as a reward for their activities in the real world.



"To ensure that Minecraft players have an enjoyable and safe experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated into our Minecraft client and server applications. They also cannot be utilized to create NFTs associated with any in-game content, including skins, worlds, items, or any other mods," Mojang wrote in the post.



"We will also be keeping an eye on how blockchain technology develops over time to ensure that these principles are withheld, and to determine if blockchain technology will enable safer gaming as well as other inclusive and practical games," the company stated. "However, we have no plans of implementing blockchain technology into Minecraft at the moment."



In response to backlash from players, and the soaring of the cryptocurrency market, the traditional gaming industry has been trying to separate itself from NFTs in recent months. Sony announced last week that it would launch the feature of digital collectibles in its new PlayStation Rewards program. However, Sony clarified emphatically that its collectibles are "definitely not NFTs." Ubisoft has been the first major game publisher to play with NFTs in the fall of 2017, shut down its experiment after four months. Last October, Steam marketplace owner Valve stated that it would not allow any games that utilize NFT or blockchain technology however Fortnite creator Epic Games recently opened the possibility of allowing these products on its game store for PC.



Microsoft hasn't yet given a definitive opinion on the subject with regard to its library of gaming properties prior to this point. But Xbox chief and Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said in Protocol last year that he was "leery" of the "near-term kind of hysteria surrounding NFTs" and the possibility of fraud, scams and the pyramid scheme nature of the crypto market, which could lead to consumers losing vast sums of real money very quickly. Spencer separately told Axios in the fall of last year that NFTs were able to be exploitative and the market was brimming with "a variety of things that probably are not things you want to see in your store."



Mojang's blog article echoes similar views. The company said that each of these uses of NFTs or other blockchain technologies creates digital owner based on scarcity, exclusion, which is not in accordance with Minecraft values of inclusion and creativity.
