Lego takes on Minecraft with video game
2 June 2015
Danish toy manufacturer Lego has come up with a new rival to popular video game Minecraft.
Lego Worlds is available today at PS11.99, via the Steam gaming platform. The game's final release, which includes classic and contemporary playsets as well as popular mini-figures, is expected in 2016.
Feedback from players will be used to add features.
Lego already sells Minecraft playsets that let gamers build their own virtual worlds. Lego Worlds invites fans to reverse the process.
Tom Stone, managing director of TT Games, which will launch Lego Worlds, said it "embodies the physical, Lego brick-building fun that consumers have enjoyed for decades and is now a digital platform that provides a new experience using the beloved bricks".
He added, "From the brick-by–brick editor, to discovering an extensive range of items characters and creatures that can populate you worlds - there are endless possibilities for creativity."
Favorite toy
Daniel Goldberg, who has written a book on the development of Minecraft, said he "was shocked that it had taken them this long".
He said that Minecraft was exactly what Lego could have done 10 years ago.
"I'm certain it will be a huge success for them."
Markus Persson, the Swedish game developer who created Minecraft, has not hidden his love of Lego. It seems that the admiration is mutual.

Speaking last year, David Gram, Lego's marketing director, saidthat "Minecraft is a digital Lego. It's an excellent idea however we wish we could have invented it.
Mr Goldberg believes that Mr. Persson who is also known as Notch will be "flattered by the match."
"Lego was his favorite toy as a child and was the primary source of inspiration for Minecraft and Minecraft, so it's great to see things come full circle," he said.
"I do not believe there will be animosity. Game developers generally are usually happy when someone copies a game."
Lego is marketed at youngsters, but it is also marketed to a serious group of adult fans.
Microsoft purchased Minecraft last year. It is a huge success for both adults and children.
"The audience for Minecraft, has proved itself to be quite big so I'm confident there will be a place for both games," said Mr Goldberg.
