The radiation RF-EMF causes damage to DNA, increase the temperature of tissues and alter the blood brain barrier. RF-EMF can cause DNA damage
The exposure to electromagnetic fields created by humans (EMFs) is associated with DNA damage, as well as other negative health consequences. In one such study researchers subjected Vero cell lines to EMF at 100 Hz over about 45 minutes. They assessed DNA damage for at 48 hours following exposure to determine whether the exposure affected DNA integrity.
The RF-EMF effect causes the heating of tissues
Although the effects of RF-EMF are typically believed as thermal in nature, some studies have shown that non-thermal effects may also be present. These factors could be responsible for some of the unresolved issues in the epidemiological study of EMF hypersensitivity. It is therefore important to take into account non-thermal effects when conducting a systematic review.
The non-thermal effects that RF-EMF can have may occur at the cell membrane. This is an area of research that has been thoroughly studied. Particularly the electrochemical behavior of cell membranes has been investigated. It is believed that RF-EMF energy that exceeds 1 MHz is transferred to tissue through dielectric and Ionic dissipation. The theoretical studies have indicated that the energy transfer to tissues could be up to 200 kV/m.
The electric properties of tissues are regulated by the composition and distribution of water molecules, ions and other molecules in the body. This determines how well absorbed EMR from RF is absorbed by different tissues. Tissues with higher conductivity tend to absorb more of the EMR field and produce more of an impact. This is why the degree of heating in tissues does not increase steadily as it moves from the exterior to the body and is only noticeable in hot spots. Bone and fatty tissue is less prone to RF heating than other tissues, because they have a low water content.
The depth of the field's penetration is determined by the frequency and strength of the field. Muscle tissue absorbs more energies than the other tissue, and transforms it into heat more efficiently. Typically, the depth of penetration of RF-EMF is measured by millimeters (mm). But, the higher the frequency, the deeper the penetration.
RF-EMF causes blood-brain barrier disruption
Researchers have discovered that RF EMF could disrupt the blood-brain barrier which can alter sleep patterns and neurotransmitter levels. In addition, the effects on the effects of EMF affect brain function have been associated with neurodegenerative disorders. Research suggests that EMF exposure may increase erythrocyte cell membrane permeability, which may affect the BBB and also increase the efflux of calcium ions. Additionally, the presence of a 99mTcMIBI radiotracer inside the brain is also associated with increasing the permeability of BBB.
