Recently a Know Your Lore got kind of derailed by the alleged images of Kil'Jaeden Tichondrius Archimonde, Kil'Jaeden and Sargeras from a private server. It's difficult to determine if the models are "real" or not, just because there's a lot you can do on private servers. Wow Servers Mobs can be spawned anywhere or shrink and blow up objects, use GM weapons and teleport to wherever you'd like.
Now, officially, private servers are A Very Bad Thing/Illegal/Against TOS. I'm not sure of the exact nature of the violation, but Blizzard certainly does not approve of this kind of thing. Therefore, we don't endorse private servers. Private servers are part WOW culture, just like account sharing, gold buying and the jerk who camps on rooftops in HFP.
Experiences with private servers seem to differ. Some of my friends have tried them and found them to be unsatisfactory. It's a lot of fun to to waltz in and do whatever you want. It's enjoyable for around fifteen minutes, but then it becomes boring. On the other hand, I've seen the other side.
I was permitted to play on an unofficial "sandbox" server with no NPCs in the BC alpha for about two hours last fall and while I'm now aware that it was Wrong and Bad of me however, I had a blast. Playing with the character creator before anyone else, seeing the new Outland zones and imagining what would be there, or even reading the notes that the GMs made about the landscape ... it was an absolute blast. It was a risky adventure I would never repeat. I don’t want to experience any negative consequences to me or to anyone else on the computer I am playing on.
