'Minecraft Earth' will Shut down On June 30th

Just over an year after introducing Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week it would shut down the game later in the year. Minecraft Earth players have until June 30th, 2021 to play the augmented reality game before Microsoft shuts its servers and makes it no longer available for download from app marketplaces.

Developer Mojang Studios blamed the coronavirus pandemic and the changes to day-to-day life that have been brought about by it for the shut-down. Mojang Studios stated that Minecraft Earth was built around collaborative play and free movement. Mojang as well as Niantic's Pokemon Go, had modified the game to make it more accessible at home. Clearly, these changes were not enough.

After many wonderful adventures, we've made the difficult decision that Minecraft Earth will be shut down in June 2021. We are so grateful for your support. Today's final version of Minecraft Earth includes many adjustments to make the final months as fun as we can.

- Minecraft (@Minecraft), January 5, 2021. But there is a silver lining to today's news: Mojang plans on presenting Minecraft Earth in style. Mojang has released a final update to Minecraft Earth. It contains changes that "make your time playing Minecraft Earth more enjoyable." The update also removes real-money transactions and drastically reduces the time to build and craft things within the game. It also gives players the chance to look at all the content that Mojang was working on prior to today's announcement. The studio stated that they believe the changes will allow players to explore, craft, build, and share more while staying safe inside.

Microsoft will erase player data on July 1 after June 30th has passed. If you've spent money on Minecraft Earth at any point during the course of the game, you'll be given a token that will allow you to download the Bedrock edition of Minecraft to your mobile device. There are more details about the shut-down on the Minecraft website.

This is a disappointing ending for Minecraft Earth for Microsoft. When we first saw the game in action at WWDC 2019 it was evident that the company had high hopes for the game. The fact that Minecraft Earth couldn't survive through the outbreak, with all the resources of Microsoft available isn't a positive sign for the future of consumer AR applications.

"We're forever thankful for the talent in the Minecraft community," Mojang said. "This was not an easy decision. We're doing everything we can to ensure that you get the most enjoyment from Minecraft Earth before it goes dark."
