Minecraft Creator on Microsoft Deal: 'It's about My Sanity'

Minecraft creator on Microsoft deal: "It's about my sanity'

Shortly after it was announced that Microsoft was buying Minecraft developer Mojang for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn), the Swedish developer behind the game Markus Persson - known as Notch released his own personal statement on the deal. Below is the entire statement.

Mojang is leaving me.

I don't see myself as an actual game developer. I make games to have fun and because I love programming. I'm Bonnie And You Are But I don't want to make them huge hits. I also don’t want to make a difference in the world.

Minecraft definitely became a massive hit, and people are saying it's changed games. It didn't happen by accident. It's certainly gratifying and to slowly get thrust into some kind of public spotlight is fascinating.

A while ago, I made the decision to step down from Minecraft development. Jens was the ideal person to lead the project and I was looking for new things. In the beginning, I failed by trying to make something massive again, but since I decided to stick to small prototypes and fun challenges, I've had so many fun working.

I wasn't entirely sure how I fit into Mojang where people actually did work, but because people told me that I was important to the culture, I decided to stay.

I was at home with a bad cold a few weeks ago, when the internet exploded with rage against me due to an EULA situation that I had nothing to do with. deal with. I was confused. I didn't understand. I tweeted this out of frustration.

Later I looked at the This is Phil Fish YouTube video and realized that I didn't feel the same connection I thought I did with my fans. I've become a symbol. I don't want to be a symbol, responsible for something huge that I am unable to comprehend or don't want to work on and that constantly comes back to me. I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not a CEO. I'm a geeky programmer who enjoys sharing my opinions on Twitter.

When the deal is completed and signed, I'll leave Mojang to return to web experiments and Ludum Dares. I'll probably end any project I create that is successful in gaining traction.

Given my public image that is already a bit distorted by me, I don't expect to be capable of ignoring negative feedback at all, but at the very least, I won’t be compelled to go through them.

This is contrary to many of my public statements. I'm not sure of a response to this. I am also aware that a lot of you have used me as a symbol of some perceived struggle. I'm not. I'm a person , and I'm right there with you.

You are my best friend. You're all amazing. Thank you for creating Minecraft what it is today. However, there are too many of us and I am not responsible for something as large as Minecraft. In one sense, it's a part belonging to Microsoft now. In a much bigger sense, it's been a part of all of you for a long time and that's not going to change.

It's not just about the money. It's about my sanity.
