Minecraft Game Adds Ordnance Survey GB Terrain Data

Minecraft game includes Ordnance Survey GB terrain data By Matthew Wall Technology reporter, BBC News

23 September 2013

Minecraft, the popular video game that lets you build and creating monsters, now allows you to incorporate Ordnance Survey terrain data from Great Britain into your blockwork virtual world.

The game's 33 million gamers can create worlds on top of accurate landscapes covering 224,000 sq km (86,000 sq miles) of Britain.

Joseph Braybrook, an intern with OS's Innovation Labs, created the GB Minecraft world in just two weeks.

It makes use of free OS OpenData products.

Graham Dunlop, OS Innovation Lab Manager, said that "we think we've constructed the largest Minecraft world ever" using real-world data.

"The map that was created demonstrates the enormous potential of Minecraft not just for geography and computer technology-related purposes in schools but as well for the vast array of OS OpenData applications."

Minecraft was developed in 2009 by Swede Markus "Notch", and is an online world made up cubes of different materials like sand, rock and lava.

Players can collaborate in the construction of shelters, creating things out of raw materials, and fighting off various monsters.

More than 22 billion Minecraft blocks are stored in the OS GB world.

Once the players have downloaded the map to Minecraft it is then possible to enter the 3D virtual world via OS's headquarters in Southampton and from there can recreate real-life features, like Stonehenge or even imagined structures like Hogwarts castle.

OS Terrain 50 and OS VectorMap OS VectorMap are OS map products that combine to create a 3D model that is layered with features like water, woodland, and roads.

Players can construct their own structures on top of the realistic terrain.

OS is the UK's national mapping authority. Its data covers the mainland and its islands but not Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man or Channel Islands.
