Xbox, Sony Hackers Hit by Hack Attack

Hack attack on Sony and Xbox

20 January 2015

Lizard Squad hacking group was victimized by a shambolic attack that exposed the entire database of users.

The group claimed to have taken off the PlayStation and Xbox gaming networks during Christmas.

It soon established an online platform that allowed anyone who paid to use its software to flood other sites with data.

The attack that exposed the list of customers is just one of many targeted at the group or its tools.

Investigative journalist Brian Krebs broke the news that the database that powers the Lizard Stresser tool was compromised. The Stresser allowed those who paid for it to load websites or remove users from their websites by dumping information.

Mr Krebs did not specify who got at the information, but said he had acquired a dump of the entire list of 14,241 people who signed up.

Anyone visiting the Stresser website was warned of the attack through a text message on the main page's login box that urged users to change the password they created when they registered.

In a blog post the author Krebs stated that the Lizard Squad had not taken many precautions to protect the login and contact information provided by users.

"All registered usernames and passwords were saved in plain text," said Mr Krebs, adding that only a handful of the people who registered paid for access to the site.

Tech news site Ars Technica also got hold of the database dump that was posted for a brief time on the Mega file-sharing service. It claimed that the majority of people who utilized it were gamers who wanted to stop rivals playing the same game. Minecraft servers were a favorite user of Stresser, it said.

Ars Technica stated that the dump of the database could trigger problems for anyone who had access to it, as a lot of IP addresses were poorly hidden and could be recovered with some effort.

The theft of the database comes shortly after other experts in computer science dismantled the tools that Lizard Squad has been using. One exposed the source code of a program used to target people on IRC chat networks,

Additionally, shortly after the Stresser site was launched the computer science student Eric Zhang managed to enumerate the names of all the people who had signed up using a very simple script.

"That took just 10 minutes to complete," he said.

He said that he wasn't shocked that the entire database was stolen because he checked the site and saw that the public access to the server behind it was still open.

He said that the website was run by someone with no formal expertise in software engineering.

"Most of what they're doing isn't very impressive," he said. "Anyone can do this. It takes only time.

Mr. Krebs stated that Lizard Squad was being targeted by security professionals who were irritated by their sudden notoriety.

He said: "There seems to be a general sense in the security research community that these people are in way over their heads and that should we not find a way to bring justice to a bunch of teenagers from Western nations who are making fun of everyone else and causing a sour situation."

He claimed that the group survived because of the length of time it took for investigations to be conducted and the members to be identified. Recent arrests of Lizard Squad members seemed only to have snatched a few of its hangers-on , but let some of the remaining members of the group remain at large.
