Patch 3.3 The Dungeon Finder Guide

Patch 3.3 is available and the old interface for group search has been removed. Are you tired of heroic daily news? Gone. The reputation dungeon daily? Gone. The results of completing all those daily tasks are now Feats of Strength as If you didn't have them prior to they'll be impossible to get now.

In their place, we have the possibility of waiting for dungeons the same way you normally queue for battlegrounds. We get the ability to almost instantaneously have our group put together and be teleported directly inside the game. If you've reached the age of 80, there's no absurd GearScore requirements (thanks to the Earth Mother), insane dps requirements, or achievement-based checking. It solves all the issues that come with trying to find an entire group of heroes who can get gear.

Let's take an in-depth look at the feature.

A little bit of background... First, we're going to discuss the reason we have this awesome tool. In the days before "Additional instances can not be launched", the servers were set up in a way that each realm had its own instance. This is what we think it would look like, considering that Blizzard has its own network layout.

However, this was before Wrath. It was something that guilds were involved in, but it wasn't something that the majority of players was interested in. When Wrath hit and pugging became a cool new trend however, the servers for instance weren't prepared for it. To prevent the servers from collapsing under the burden of so many instances run on them, Blizzard implemented a cap on the number of instances that could be running simultaneously. This ensured that instances were reliable and simple to use however it also made it very difficult to access and created the "Additional instances" issue that we all know.

This was a temporary solution to their larger strategy. To address the issue with "Additional Instances" they wiped out all instances servers that were attached to one realm and made them available to all realms in their battlegroup. If your previous instance server was completely full, you've been sent to an instance server that still had slots available on it. Tada, "Additional instances" is now fixed. This is, of course, an estimate since Blizzard will not release the information.

This opened up a lot of possibilities for Blizzard. Since your instance servers were shared across the battlegroup, you were suddenly able to join an instance with anyone from your battlegroup. All you need is a swank interface and you're good to go. Okay, we're a bit simplistic this, but it's what they did. Let's take a look at it.

Quick and Dirty Dungeons... all about private wow servers If you'd like to read the same text with images, I've added an image gallery at the end of the guide to make it easier to understand the message I'm trying to convey.

If you log into World of Warcraft right now and hit your button for the old Looking for Group window, you'll get the new 'Dungeon Finder instead. It's kind of similar to the way the previous one was laid out. Your role selection is at the top, whether as a healer, tank, or DPS. You've also got the option to be the leader of the party.

The only difference is that instead of the standard choice of your three dungeons or heroics or raids there's the option of completing a quest. Not only that, but at the age of 80, you can take on your daily heroic quest. For the daily quest, all you have to do is click Find Group'. Lower level characters will get an awesome goody bag that includes blue-quality items for leveling up and dungeon running.

Give it around 2 seconds (that was the time I was getting on the PTR, however your mileage may differ) and you'll be informed what role you'll be filling along with the quest rewards you should be expecting after completing this dungeon. That graphic was the one that got me started.

You'll see a ready-check-check-check-check-check-check appear after you click 'Enter' Dungeon. That will let you know that everyone else has pressed their entry dungeon buttons too. The check marks represent the people who are ready, question marks are the people you're waiting on. If you notice a huge red X on one of the players (in my case, the healer declined), then the Dungeon Finder will pop your pre-assembled team out of ready and locate a replacement. You're still at the top of the line, so the first appropriate healer to pop up is yours. It will repeat the same ready-check procedure until it finally has everyone gathered and ready to go into the dungeon.

You should note that you have not had to speak with anyone, or from any party, or argue about who the healer is and who is dps at this point.

Once everyone is in the room when everyone is ready, you will be taken to the dungeon. You will not pass the meeting stones and you will not have to fight for the right to enter. In the default UI, every player has an icon for their particular role on their party nameplate. Healing is indicated by the same little plus sign that appears on the Dungeon Finder screen, dps has a little dagger (or perhaps it's a sword) and the tank has a shield icon. The party leader even has a flag icon. Isn't it adorable? Thanks to this, there's no confusion about who does what. After everyone has been buffed, it checks to see if there's an X sign and then pulls.

If everything goes well and you kill the final boss of the dungeon, the quest rewards pop up in your inventory. If you leave through the entrance to the dungeon you'll be transported back to where ever you were before hitting the button 'Enter Dungeon'. You can repeat the process again for more loot and rewards.
