Breck Bednar's Mom Urges Gamers To "Play Virtual Live, Play Real'

Breck Bednar's mom enjoins gamers to "play virtual, but live the real"

12 January 2015

The mother of a 14-year-old boy from Surrey who was killed by a teen he met through online gaming She hopes that the story of her son's victim will lead to better security on the internet for all.

Lewis Daynes killed Breck Bednar after the 19-year-old was lured to Grays, Essex by the 19-year old.

Lorin LaFave stated: "I want Breck’s story to prove that there is really evil out there. Not everyone.

"But it only takes one person who is evil to cause this kind of damage."

Lewis Daynes pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life prison

Lorin the resident, who is one of the Caterham resident, claims that Breck and his companions used to spend their evenings on Daynes server playing war games.

"When I would enter his room or walk by and listen, I could hear how interesting it was and I could see the reason why they were socializing in this way."

She began to be concerned about the possibility that Daynes was having a growing influence over her son and that his personality was starting to change.

"Breck was telling me that Daynes did not believe it was appropriate to have a computer at his desk. Daynes did not think it was appropriate to do chores. Daynes did not believe that he should be expected to take part in family activities.

Lorin removed her son's computer and reported her concerns to the police.

'Manipulative behaviour'

"I told them about Daynes's manipulative behaviour and the fact that I thought that he was grooming Breck and the other boys. I simply said, 'I'm convinced there's something wrong because Breck's behavior is changing and he's changing his beliefs.'"

She didn't know that the older teenager had sent Breck an mobile phone to ensure they were in contact.

She claims he would tell Breck about lucrative opportunities in business and promise in one email that they would work together and earn millions of dollars.

Lorin believes that the boys were enthralled by the fake online persona Daynes had created for himself.

Breck believed in it for a reason. He wanted to be with someone who had this influence, such wealth and such experience. He was an instructor, I believe. They looked at him as if he was their mentor."

Daynes informed Breck that they must meet face-to-face to discuss business. Daynes booked a taxi to take Breck to his house. Breck was found dead in the home.

To promote responsible use of technology, the family established The Breck Bednar Memorial Foundation.

Their slogan is Play Virtual Live Real.

"The internet is a great tool, but don't play online with those friends, live real. Only get together with people you've known face-to-face in the real world. Breck did not live the real life. His reality was death due to the fact that Breck believed in an evil person's lies."

She is aware that this is a message young people need to hear . Breck was a participant in an online safety class a month prior to his murder But she wants to make sure that they don't overlook it.

"If Breck was here, Breck would have said, "Guys, I didn't believe in that however, there are some dangerous people out there." He lost his life.

"Imagine the message that comes from Breck"

She wants young people to think that the message of safety comes from Breck himself.

"What did he think of when he was assaulted by Daynes? Did he think, "Wow, mum was right?' Did he consider, 'Man I've made a mess of it What did he think? What was going through his mind? It was too late.

Ms. LaFave would like the government to invest more in this area so that every parent can be assured that an investigation will be conducted when they report online concerns.

Daynes was scheduled to be tried and was accused of murder but admitted the offence at the last moment. He will serve a minimum term of 25 years.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been referred to the matter by the Essex and Surrey Police.

They will attempt to figure out if one of the forces could have done something differently.
