three components of GPS
-space segment: constellation of satellites orbiting the Earth in fixed paths designed for maximum coverage (2 orbits/day)
-control segment: series of worldwide ground stations that track and monitor the satellite signals being transmitted (2-way transmission
-user segment: GPS unit on Earth that receives the signals (one-way data transmission only)
trilateration: the process of finding a location in relation to three points of reference
-found using 3 points to find a location in reference to known points
-use the first point and second point of reference to narrow location down to two intersections
-third point used to pick between the two to find the location
-a fourth satellite is needed to correct clock errors
-GPS position is measured using the WGS84 datum
Whys GPS not perfectly accurate
-GPS generally accurate within 10-15 meters (horizontally)
-selective availability: error introduced intentionally to make FPS less accurate
-ephemerid errors: occur when satellites are out of position and broadcast incorrect info about their location
multipath: delay in signal due to reflecting from surfaces before reaching the receiver
