Microsoft is Bringing 'Minecraft' to The Oculus Rift

Minecraft is a fun and hugely successful game, however, no one would claim its success is dependent on real-world accuracy. Although the game's blocky graphics are brimming with sharp right angles and large "pixels" however, they have a lot of charm and a distinctive style of visual. It is clear that Minecraft's vast open-world style makes it a great game for virtual reality. Microsoft has already demonstrated the game in HoloLens and it is now available for Oculus Rift. I got a chance to test how the game functions with the Rift at Microsoft's spring showcase last weekand despite the game's minimalist design, it could be one of the best overall VR experiences out there.

It's important to remember that this is not an entirely new Minecraft version. It has been updated to work with Oculus Rift. You can play in survival mode, and also join one of the many multiplayer servers out there. You'll be presented with two view modes when you begin playing. The first is a virtual castle with the game running on a TV screen in front of you. It's quite a meta- and hilarious to play games within the virtual reality game. However, it's an excellent way to look at things when you need to get away from the full VR experience.

You can jump into the full experience and be completely immersed in what your character is experiencing. Due to the vastness of Minecraft's vast 3D worlds it truly feels like you've been transported away from reality, despite the massive pixels and lack of fine details. It's one of the best and more immersive VR experiences I've had thus far. Minecraft's success is actually due to the lack of fine details. Minecraft servers The game doesn't try to replicate the real world. Instead, it felt more like I was in an animated cartoon.

The demo experience Microsoft was showing off goes through a few of the games signature moments -- I mined, fought some creeps, illuminated caves with torches, pressed several buttons to interact with the environment and eventually rode a mine cart up the side of a massive building. This was the best part of the demo. I felt as if I was flying high and quickly. Then, a mine cart ride let me observe 360 degrees from high up while it was heading towards a new area. There was plenty of entertainment and eye candy throughout the trip.

It's difficult to describe the experience in words since VR is extremely immersive. Although it's not as immersive as the HoloLens version, it's still an excellent place to explore. Although there is no specific date for when Minecraft will be available in VR, it is expected that it will not be long after Rift's launch later this month. While "killer app" may seem like a cliché, Minecraft has the potential of becoming a major player in the upcoming VR scene.
