'Minecraft' Tops 100 million Sales

The Minecraft monster shows no signs of slowing down. Developer Mojang today announced that Minecraft has sold 100 million copies across all platforms, including PCs, Macs consoles, mobile devices, and consoles. About 53,000 copies of the game have been sold each day since the game's launch. The game is addictive. More than 40 million people open Minecraft every month to play with a shovel, axe, and sword. Except for Tetris, only a handful of games have come anywhere close to the 100 million mark.

Much of the success is due to the game's open structure and unlimited potential. Players can construct whatever they want as long as the outward-facing geometry is comprised of simple, vibrant blocks. The focus on creativity is why so many players, both old and young, have been attracted to the game and continue to play for years after the release. Mojang has provided constant updates to the game, adding new mechanics, creatures and materials. The game's versatility has made it a huge hit in the classroom, in teaching the subjects of geology, art programming, and many other subjects.

When Microsoft acquired Mojang about two years ago, many wondered what it planned to do with the game. Minecraft A sequel? A kind of exclusiveness to Xbox, PC and Windows Phone? In reality it's not been realized. Minecraft is now available on more platforms than ever before and there has been no mention of the possibility of a Minecraft 2. Instead, we've seen a HoloLens version of the game, a spin-off adventure series by Telltale Games and an acquisition of MinecraftEdu that will result in a new educational version of Minecraft. Soon, there will be a version just for China too.

Minecraft's popularity shows no sign of waning. Minecraft's strength isn’t its finite story or stunning graphics. It has a timeless appeal that draws young children as they age enough to play it. Minecraft will continue to sell in remarkable numbers in the long run.
