Minecraft Player Spends two Years Creating A Virtual City

Minecraft player invests two years building virtual city by Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

17 October 2014

A student from Delaware has spent two years creating a virtual world he has named Titan City in the video game Minecraft.

Titan City is comprised of 4.5 Million Minecraft building blocks. It also has 96 buildings.

Duncan Parcells says it has taken the project two years to complete his project, working an average of five hours per week working on the project.

His first building was a virtual version of the World Trade Center, which took 18 months to perfect.

The 19-year-old believes Titan City is not a realistic New York model.

He told the BBC, "It's inspired New York."

"A lot of people believe it's a recreational activity, but it's not."
keep calm and say ‘arrr’

He constructed the city using the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft but has now transferred it to the PC version that is, he claims, provides more construction opportunities.

Mr Parcells plans to build an airport as well as a sports arena.

He said, "I suppose it's an outlet to architecture and energy."

"Architecture has always been something that I have loved. I am most proud of Victorian-style buildings that are less modern and more art deco.

"A lot of people drop in and are looking to explore the area or help in the construction." Many of them help to construct roads.

While Titan City has received a warm reception on the internet, Mr. Parcells said that to date he has kept his virtual world separate from his everyday life.

He said, "I've kept this under wraps. It's sort of like a different life I'm not able to talk about, but people are beginning to learn about it."

"My parents think it's cool. I think they're just happy that I don't do it often."

Microsoft recently announced that it would purchase Minecraft studio Mojang in a deal of $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

The game registered its 100 millionth player in February 2014, its inventor Markus Persson, aka Notch, announced on Twitter.

After an initial purchase of the game Minecraft is free to play but there are in-game purchases that can be purchased.

The game is set in a virtual universe composed of cubes of various materials. A majority of these materials can be used to construct blocks, while some can be converted into usable raw materials, such as wood, iron, and diamond.

The game demands you to survive by building shelters using blocks and turn raw materials and combinations thereof into useful items (swords and armour, bows and so on.) to fight the many monsters that are in the game.
