Roblox Malware Accounts for 9.6 Percent of Gaming-related Cyberthreats

According to a report from Kaspersky's SecureList, Roblox malware is responsible for 9.6 percent of all gaming-related cyberthreats. This is based on the number of associated with malicious or unwanted files. The platform trails only Minecraft and FIFA, responsible for 25.2 percent and 11.7 percent of such threats respectively.

Kaspersky, a cybersecurity leader utilizes AI-driven technology to provide protection against hackers and viruses. The company created the gaming-related cyberthreats report to inform gamers about the most recent cyberthreats and provide information on the most prevalent and dangerous malware they might encounter.

The study analysed the risks and statistics associated with cryptocurrency miner attacks, threats masquerading as game cheaters, and even hackers who steal data. Kaspersky has created an inventory of the 28 most popular games that were or would soon be available on Origin and Steam, along with tiles that are platform independent to identify the most significant threats. Alongside Roblox the list also includes Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto, Need for Speed, Call of Duty, FIFA, CS:GO, and PlayerUnknown's BattleGrounds (PUBG).

The security firm discovered that the top five PC games used as security threats between July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022 included Minecraft, Roblox, Need for Speed, Grand Theft Auto, and Call of Duty. Minecraft servers The most popular mobile games played during the same time period included Minecraft, Roblox, Grand Theft Auto, PUBG and FIFA.

The organisation reviewed 91,984 files in the period of review that contained malware and potentially unwanted programs that were distributed via listed popular game titles as a lure, impacting 384,224 users. It ranked Roblox as the third most frequent threat vector based on the number of related malicious or unwanted files (8,903) and the second in terms of number of affected users (38,838) just behind Minecraft (131,005).

Kaspersky's analysis notes that multiplayer gaming platforms may represent a greater threat than other games, particularly pointing towards Minecraft and Roblox as examples.

The report states that "Worryingly" the primary target audience of these games are teenagers and children who have no experience in cybersecurity. "Because of this, we think they will be a prime prey for cybercriminals, which means we need to pay special attention to cybersecurity hygiene training for kids."

The company also said that malware and other unwelcome software that was distributed as cheats were an extremely risk, particularly to players with a special desire for a popular series of games.

The report states that players often get malicious software on their devices, which steals sensitive data when they attempt to download popular games from third-grade sites instead of purchasing them from the official website.

They usually contain "cracked" software versions of popular games, which are those which people attempt to download illegally and play for free , instead of paying the retail price. However, many people fall into the trap of downloading malicious versions of games simply by clicking on misleading links to websites that claim to be legitimate content.

Kaspersky offers a range of suggestions to gamers to help them defend themselves from hacking, malware, attacks, phishing, and other threats. To ensure authenticity, Kaspersky suggests using two-factor authentication for all accounts, using strong passwords and double-checking the URLs of downloads. Kaspersky suggests that you stay clear of cracked software and illegal content such as cheats.

To ensure they're safe, our team reviews the titles on our list for the most popular Roblox games for 2022. To obtain Roblox gear for free, also refer to our Roblox promo codes for September list. Our team also vets our Roblox music codes for September, meaning you can use them to play music from your favorite artists in the game instead of trying to access them via downloading content that is illegal.
