'Minecraft' Studio Wants nothing to be Associated With NFTs

Don't be expecting to purchase a creeper skin as an NFT (non-fungible token) and connect it to your Minecraft server in the near future. Mojang has taken a firm stance against the popular game's use of NFTs and blockchain technology. "[Toensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience Blockchain technology isn't allowed to be integrated into our Minecraft client or server applications, nor can it be used to create NFTs associated to any in-game content such as worlds and skins, persona objects, or other mods," Mojang stated in an announcement. The game will soon be updated with the game's guidelines in line with.



Minecraft provides a marketplace where users can sell their creations to others. Mojang states that some companies have recently begun offering NFTs that are tied to the game. Certain NFTs can be purchased in exchange for Minecraft skin packs or world files. The studio has said that it could be possible for players to earn Minecraft NFTs through activities they completed inside the game, or elsewhere. Mojang isn't on board with any of this.



It stated that each of these uses of NFTs or other blockchain technologies creates digital owner based on scarcity, exclusion, which is not in line with Minecraft values of inclusiveness and creativity. "NFTs are not inclusive of our community and create a situation of the haves and have-nots."



While Minecraft server owners are allowed to charge users for access, Mojang rules state that everyone should have access to the same functionality and content. The studio stated that NFTs can create scarcity and exclusion models which are not in line with our guidelines and spirit of Minecraft.



Mojang also expressed concern about the uncertain nature of NFTs and noted that some have been sold at "artificially or fraudulently high prices." It's not a great idea for Minecraft to support NFTs due to the millions of users who are young. Mojang has stated that NFTs have a speculative pricing model and investment mentality distracts from the game and encourages profiteering. This is contrary to the long-term joy of our players.



The studio and its parent company Microsoft have a valid reasons to be cautious about blockchain technology and NFTs. There has been a significant backlash from the wider gaming community against these technologies. Another reason is that prices for cryptocurrency have plummeted and the NFT market is dwindling. Axie Infinity was once a pioneer in blockchain gaming. As a result, victims lost out and daily player numbers fell by more than two-thirds in the past few months.



Other major players in the gaming industry have already stayed clear of NFTs and the blockchain. In October, Steam banned games that enable cryptocurrency and NFT trading. Sony recently announced the launch of a PlayStation Rewards program that offers digital collectibles. However, the company stressed that they cannot be traded and that the program does not include NFTs or the blockchain.

However, Mojang isn't completely rejecting the blockchain. The studio said it will be monitoring the development of the technology to "determine whether it can provide more secure gaming experiences or other more inclusive and practical applications in gaming."
