Mojang's breakout hit Minecraft was ranked second in Google's list of the top YouTube searches of 2014. It was ranked immediately behind the word "music" in terms of frequency of searches.
According to Google, "Minecraft" was most frequently searched on YouTube in 2014 than "movies". PewDiePie, a gaming celebrity was also among the top searched for terms on YouTube in 2014. This was behind queries for Disney's Frozen as well as musicians Drake and Beyonce.
Google reports that user searches and engagement for gaming-related content are on the rise even though the majority of users don't necessarily identify as gamers. YouTube videos in the "Gaming" category topped the service's Top 10 most popular list on a variety of days in October of 2014.
According to the report the report, the report states that a Google Consumer Survey was conducted in October 2014 among people who claimed to have watched gaming videos on YouTube. "When asked about the reasons they watch gaming videos, viewers mentioned the entertainment aspect and also as learning new strategies or learning tips.
The report continues: "We also wanted out why they watched the videos of creators such as SkyDoesMinecraft and PewDiePie. Many of the fans responded, "Because they are hilarious!" Some even said that these videos were like stand-up comedy. An up-and-coming gaming creator summed the excitement with this analogy: "You don't have to play soccer to enjoy it on TV.'"
