'Minecraft' Studio Wants nothing to have to do With NFTs

Don't be expecting to purchase the creeper skin as an NFT (non-fungible token) and plug it into your Minecraft server in the near future. Mojang has taken a firm stance against the popular game's use of NFTs and blockchain technology. According to the studio it was possible for players of Minecraft to earn Minecraft NFTs through actions performed within the game or in other locations. Mojang isn't in agreement with any of this.



It was stated that each of these applications of NFTs or other blockchain technologies creates a digital owner based on scarcity and exclusion, which isn't in the spirit of Minecraft values of creative inclusion. "NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a scenario of the haves and the have-nots."



While Minecraft server owners are permitted to charge users for access, Mojang rules state that everyone should have access the same functionality and content. "NFTs, however, can create models of scarcity and exclusion that do not conform to our guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft," the studio stated.



Mojang also expressed concern over the speculative nature of NFTs and said that certain were sold at "artificially and fraudulently overinflated prices." It's not a great idea for Minecraft to allow NFTs, given its millions of young players. "The speculative pricing and investment mindset surrounding NFTs takes the focus away from playing the game and encourages profit-seeking, which we believe is incompatible with the long-term joy and the success of our players," Mojang said.



The studio and its parent company Microsoft have good reason to be wary of NFTs and blockchain tech. There has been a massive opposition from the gaming community against these technologies.
