Minecraft To Aid UN Regeneration Projects

Minecraft to support UN regeneration projects

Plans for development plans for 300 locations all over the world are being modeled in Minecraft so residents can help determine how the places will be changed.

The program is dubbed Block by Block, the programme is part of an alliance between Minecraft maker Mojang and UN Habitat.

Urban areas will be recreated on computer by using Minecraft which allows residents to experience a virtual tour.

They will also be able to modify the model and determine how the regeneration money should be spent.

The Undugu playground, which is located in the Kibera region on the outskirts Nairobi, was one of the first areas to be recreated in Minecraft for Block by Block's pilot program.

"We'll incorporate it into the game so that players can stroll around and feel like it's as real as is possible," Lydia Winters, the manager of the community liaison at Mojang told the BBC.

Undugu was recreated on computer by Minecraft modeling firm Fyre UK. The UN plans to make the playground coming soon to those who live near it.

Virtual visits

Minecraft is a world composed of cubes. Each cube is made from a different virtual material such as dirt, stone, diamond, iron ore and so on. The game requires you to stack the cubes, and then break them into their basic materials. This allows you to create artifacts and objects.

The ease at that the real world could be modeled in Minecraft led UN Habitat to approach Mojang to help it with its plans for urban regeneration said Ms Winters.

UN Habitat will remodel 300 areas in Minecraft by 2016. This will allow the residents of those areas to take part in the transformation.

"It's the way to bring decision makers together with the youth to all choose a common ground for public spaces all over the globe," said Ms Winters.

At the Minecon conference in Paris that took place from 24-25 November to reveal details about the project,
