Not content with just a few billions, Minecraft starts racking up more sales this week when it goes live as a download game for Xbox One - and perhaps PS4 too. The Xbox One release date is locked in for Friday 5 September the day that Mojang's sandbox owners on the 360 version of the game will be be upgraded to a PS4 version for $5 The price is $5/PS4 - Microsoft says the upgrade is applicable regardless of whether you have an original disc or download copy. The full version costs $20/PS16.
Although the PS4 release date is not set however, Mojang's Daniel Kaplan tweeted saying that "Sony gamers can look forward to an exciting Minecraft surprise soon...or perhaps earlier?" The teaser came in response to an PlayStation France tweet that claimed the PS4 version will release today, although no other Sony channels have confirmed this. We'll let everyone know as soon as we find out a date for the PS4 version.
Update: The PlayStation 4 version of Minecraft has been launched in the EU. There's no word yet on when the game will reach North America or other territories. [Image: 4J Studios]
It is unlikely that the Vita version will be released this week. 4J Studios, the porting team, announced last week that they had "more work" to do before it could submit Vita builds to Sony for certification.
Roof is on fire
The latest Minecraft versions have Minecraft worlds that are up to 36 times larger than the previous version. They also have greater draw distances. Also, PS3 and Xbox 360 owners can import their worlds into the PS4 and Xbox One versions respectively.
The news comes in the same week Mojang released Minecraft 1.8 on PC The update has been in development for the longest at the Swedish studio, coming in at 300 days. It's therefore no surprise that it's a bit of an enormous update, bringing a whole host of features that you can explore here. Highlights include new Guardian and Endermite mobs balanced by the introduction of d'awww - rabbits. Oh and killer bunnies that are less d'awww but still a little dawww. [Image: Mojang]
