The planets have aligned, and I've returned to Minecraft. Every once and a while I feel the need to contact a few friends, spin up an account and then spend a few hours every week building up crazy things and fighting for survival in a chaotic world. Normally hosting the server using my laptop. But this time I wanted to do something different (read more complicated). I am a programmer and have the power of cloud computing at my disposal so why not create Linode instances and host the server there?
The first night I made the incredibly mistake of using my existing Linode instance to host the server. MINECRAFT MULTIPLAYER A tiny 1 core 1GB memory machine is able to run a decent static website, but it's not great in running a gaming server. If you want the server to constantly crash and run out of memory, then that's the method you should test.
Linode's 4 core and 4GB memory instances are recommended for those who want to actually play the game. It will be sufficient unless you plan on hosting dozens of people at the same time. The most appealing thing is that these instances are $0.06/hr. Last night, I spent 4 hours playing with a friend, and it cost me 24C/.
I've written a shell script that will perform the installation for me, and even sign the EULA. Now, whenever I want to play with some friends, I can hit a total of three buttons on Linode's admin panel, SSH into the server, execute my script and start playing. When I'm done, I can transfer all of the world onto my Mac through FTP and close the server. It's simple, inexpensive and fast.
