How do you spawn?

Axolotls were initially believed to be spawning in one of the newest cave biomes, Lush Caves. The new biomes won't be accessible in Minecraft until later in the year. So where are these fun fish, and when will they appear?



Axolotls are able to spawn in any underground water source in the event that it's in total darkness and below sea level (y63). You can also connect the lead to an axolotl if you don't have a bucket handy, but it will die if it's out of water for over five minutes, however, not if it's pouring rain or there's a thunderstorm.



How to breed

Axolotls can also be bred with buckets of tropical fish. When you have two adult Axolotls, you can feed them each with the tropical fish. When they fall in love, you will see red hearts. What a sweet gesture.



The baby axolotl will be given the colour of its parents at random. It will take 20 minutes to mature. You can speed up the process by using more exotic fish.

Blue


The blue axolotl is the most rare colour and has a 0.083% possibility of spawning naturally or via the breeding of adults with other colours. If you have your heart set on the blue axolotl you will need patience and more luck than usual.



What they eat



What do axolotls eat?



Axolotls prefer tropical fish, which are generally found in marine biomes. A bucket of tropical fish is more than a single catch to feed an axolotl.



Tropical fish are very fearful and are difficult to capture in buckets. This is why patience is important. Otherwise, it's worth checking to check whether the Wandering Trader has a bucket of tropical fish available for sale.



Combat



Do axolotls infiltrate other mobs?



These adorable creatures aren't a threat to players but they will fight sea-borne threats. While they will leave turtles and dolphins to their own devices, the rest is fair game. They'll even fight the Drowned.



They also have a neat defence mechanism: If an Axolotl is hit when submerged, it will go dead and gain Regeneration. The Regeneration status effect may be transferred to a player temporarily when they kill a mob the that the axolotl is fighting.
