How do I spawn?

Lush Caves was the original cave biome that Axolotls were supposed to reproduce in. The new biomes won't be available in Minecraft until later in the year. So where are we able to find these fun fish, and when will they be available?



Axolotls are currently spawning in any underground source of water provided it is completely dark and below sea level (y63). This guide will be updated in the latest update 1.18 biomes to reflect any changes that may occur in the spawning. However this is the way you can still find axolotls.

Axolotls aren't technically tamed however they're not hostile to players and can be scooped up into a bucket with ease. You can then carry them around with you or re-home them in a pond or lake closer to your base.



You can also attach a lead to an axolotl in the event that you don't have a bucket handy however, it's likely to die if it's out of water for over five minutes, however, not if it's pouring rain or there's a thunderstorm.



How to breed



How to breed axolotl in Minecraft



Axolotls can be breeding using buckets of tropical fish. When you have two adult axolotls together feed them each with the tropical fish. You will see red hearts signalling that they've entered a love-mode. What a lovely way to celebrate love.



The resulting baby axolotl will be given the colour of its parents in random order. It takes 20 minutes to mature. You can speed up this process by using more tropical fish.

Minecraft axolotls are available in the following colours:

Blue


The blue axolotl is the most rare of all colors, has a 0.083 percent chance of spawning either naturally or through breeding of adult axolotls to other colors. strongcraft.org So, if you're keen on a blue axolotl you'll need to have a lot of patience and a fair amount of luck.



What they eat



What do axolotls eat?



Axolotls eat tropical fish, which are usually found in marine biomes. If you're planning to feed an axolotl you'll need to feed it an entire bucket of tropical fish, not single ones you've previously caught.



Since tropical fish tend to be easily scared, they can be quite difficult to catch in a bucket, and therefore patience is key. Otherwise, it's worth checking to see whether the Wandering Trader has a bucket of tropical fish for sale.



Combat



Are axolotls capable of attacking other mobs with their axes?



These adorable creatures aren't hostile to players , but they can take on sea-based threats. They will leave dolphins and turtles alone however they'll attack any other threat.



They also have a clever defense mechanism: If an Axolotl is damaged in the water it will die and get Regeneration. Regeneration status effects can be transferred to a player temporarily when they kill a mob the axolotl was fighting.
