How to use Split-Screen in Minecraft

Do you still remember the days of playing console games with your friends on split-screen? You can now recreate those memories and make amazing new ones with Minecraft split-screen. This feature is only available on consoles (Nintendo Switch and PlayStation) however, it is possible to create new memories by using Minecraft split-screen.

Your console or TV screen should support at minimum 720p resolution. Split-screen isn't available on PlayStation Vita because it uses QHD (1/4th of 1080p). WiiU does not support split-screen because it only has 480p resolution. You will have to connect your device to a TV with an HDMI or RGB component cable.

Find out more information here and detailed steps on splitting the screen in Minecraft.

Minecraft Splitscreen Requirements

As we've mentioned previously, you will need a console and a TV that has 720p resolution or better. You will also need to change the resolution of the video of your console to match the TV. This is simple. Go to the console's settings and work your way to the display options. PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X usually set the resolution when using HDMI. However, previous manual adjustments could cause problems that require manual reconfiguration.

You can split the screen in Minecraft locally or online. The local split-screen can hold up to four players at once. Playing with family or friends can be an enjoyable experience if you have a large TV screen. Let's start with tips for local split-screen, and later the online split-screen will get explained too.

How to Split-Screen Minecraft Locally

Local split-screen refers to playing with one console, and not being mistaken with LAN (local area network) play, where multiple devices get used. On any given device up to four players can play. The instructions for playing Minecraft in split-screen mode differ slightly for each game console, however, the steps below will cover them all.

Here's how to set up a local split-screen in Minecraft:

1. Connect the console to the television using an HDMI or component cable, then launch Minecraft.

2. If you wish to start from scratch, choose Create New or load a previous game world from the list.

3. In the Multiplayer settings, move the slider of the Multiplayer Game to the off position.

4. Set the difficulty and other game options to suit your needs.

5. To begin the game, choose the option to Create or Play.

6. Use another controller to activate the second console player and then press the appropriate button(s) to add them to Minecraft. For instance the PS4 uses the PS button to activate a user , and the button Options (pressed twice) to add the second player to Minecraft.

7. Select the account for the other player (if not already done). XBOX 360 and PS3 use the Minecraft Legacy Console Edition, so you first press Start on the second controller in order to enter into the game, and then it will prompt the player to sign in to the console.

How to Split-Screen Minecraft Online

You can play Minecraft on a split-screen screen with your friends locally and also with others online. Online play doesn't have a split screen. However the presence of two or more local players can play on the split-screen with players online. Here's how to set up a split-screen play online.

1. Log into your console with your Xbox Live Gold account or PlayStation Plus account. For XBOX 360 and XBOX One local accounts, as well as players using XBOX Live Silver (the free Live subscription) are not able to join. The PS3 does not require PlayStation Plus, but the PS4 does.

2. For Minecraft Legacy editions, open your console and select Play Game, then Load or Create. For Bedrock editions, select Create New or choose one of your games from your list.

3. You can alter your game options to your preference before launching your game. On Bedrock go to the Multiplayer menu and make sure the Multiplayer Game is turned on before starting the game.

4. Other "remote" players select your invitation (required) to join your hosted game. Split-screen is only available on a per-console basis for up to 4 people however, they can play online with others.

Minecraft's an interesting, fun, and creative game. Like all games, it's better when you play with your friends. You can now split the screen to play Minecraft as you would play older console games, but with other players.

PC users may feel excluded however, which is perfectly normal. It's unfortunate that a huge screen can't be divided and used in the same way as a console. There are screen-splitting tools from third parties on the market that you can explore however, they're not officially licensed and might not be reliable.
