Three Arrested over Murder of Popular Indian Rapper

Indian police have arrested three suspects suspected of having killed Sidhu Mowla, a hip-hop superstar. They also seized a cache of weaponry including a grenade launcher from the suspects.

Moose Wala -- also known by his birth name Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu -- was killed in his car in the northern part of Punjab in the month of March.



The 28-year-old was a well-known performer in India as well as in Punjabi communities around the world especially in Canada and Britain.



Special police commissioner H.S. Dhaliwal told reporters in Delhi on Monday that three suspects were arrested in the western part of Gujarat over the weekend.



Police recovered explosive grenades that explode high-explosive, a rocket launcher, an assault rifle, and electronic detonators that were stolen from the suspects.



Local media reported that Goldy Brar is a gangster from Canada who claimed responsibility for the death of the rapper and was in contact with the hitmen in the day of the incident.



"Brar called one of the shooters on the day of the incident and instructed him to ensure that the murder of Moose Wala," the Hindustan Times newspaper quoted a police officer as saying.



According to the officer, "If guns fail, you can kill him with an explosion."



Moose Wala rose to fame through catchy songs that criticized political opponents and rival rappers, portraying himself as a man who fought for the pride of his community and justice, as well as gunned down enemies.



He was criticised for promoting gun culture through his music videos, where he often was photographed with guns.



His death also brought attention to organised crime in Punjab as an important transit point for drugs entering India from Afghanistan and Pakistan.



Many observers attribute the increase in violence among gangs and the rise in the use of weapons illegally to the narcotics market which includes heroin and opium.
