Craftbukkit is an external third-party Minecraft mod that allows you to use Minecraft plugins. The mod is available on Bukkit.org and runs as a JAR file which runs the Minecraft server JAR.
After downloading the latest version of Craftbukkit modify the downloaded file to craftbukkit.jar. Download the recommended build or the development build. The recommended builds are more stable however they are often previous versions of Minecraft that users who have updated clients cannot connect to. If the recommended build isn't also updated for the latest version of Minecraft you'll want to run the development build.
Copy the craftbukkit.jar file to the same directory that contains your minecraft_server.jar. This article assumes that you have a running Minecraft server, if not, check out my article on creating your own Minecraft server.
You can start your Minecraft server in the same way you would normally but replace minecraft_server.jar with craftbukkit.jar. You may want to increase the amount of RAM that is allocated to your server since Craftbukkit will require more memory, especially when using plugins. Craftbukkit creates an configuration file named bukkit.yml when it starts. The file isn't required to be altered and is very basic.
What's next for Bukkit is selecting and installing plugins. Plugins are available on the Bukkit.org website under plugins.bukkit.org. You can search for plugins using keywords or browse them by category. Plugins which haven't been updated recently likely won't work with the latest version of Craftbukkit/Minecraft. You can download the plugin from a page.
It is very easy to download and install a plugin. If you download an JAR file, just put that file in the "plugins" folder automatically generated by Craftbukkit. You will need to restart your server for this change to take effect. The plugin will also create a folder with the same filename as the JAR file. This folder contains configuration files as well as other assets needed to run the plugin.
If the download is a zip or rar file you must unzip/unrar this file using a program which can handle these extensions. These files should be moved to the plugin folder. Make sure that the JAR file is in the root folder of the plugins folder. The new plugin will be activated when you restart your server.
