'Minecraft' Library Helps You Dodge News Media Censorship

There are a myriad of ways to evade media censorship but it's becoming more difficult when countries like China and Russia are securing VPNs and similar tools. Reporters Without Borders believes it can solve the increasing problems: make the news accessible in a game that's rarely blocked. The group has collaborated with BlockWorks and MediaMonks on the Uncensored Library, a Minecraft map that features news articles from journalists and websites that are often removed from the game due to their unflattering facts. You'll find stories from murdered Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi (whose wife Hatice Cengiz supports the project) and the activist-friendly Russian site Grani.ru and the Egyptian anti-corruption outlet Mada Masr, among others.

You can also look up details about the current state of freedom of the press in 180 countries.

The library is a technological accomplishment in its own right. It resembles a huge neo-classical library that has large collection of books and a specific section for each country. The library isn't able to be ripped apart, but you can add more when you have the time and inclination.

Reporters Without Borders believes that the Uncensored Library should have a high level of resilience. Anyone can download the required map, and Minecraft's nature allows it to host a different server in case an oppressive government tries to take one down. We don't think this will be lasting for a long time, however. Countries with already draconian censorship measures don't have to think twice about bans on Minecraft in whole-heartedly This could be a temporary respite.

But that's not the main point. This is also a commentary on censorship, and a way to engage people who normally would not be thinking about this topic. If it inspires a few Minecraft players to advocate for press freedom or pursue investigative reporting as a career the game will have fulfilled its purpose.
