Grenfell Tower: Builders 'gaming System' to Avoid Fire Safety Rules

Grenfell Tower: Builders 'gaming system' to avoid the fire safety rules

12 November 2021

Housebuilders could be "gaming the system" to bypass the fire safety checks that were that were put in place following the Grenfell Tower fire, London Fire Brigade (LFB) has warned.

Paul Jennings, Deputy Commissioner, stated that there are "hundreds, if not thousands" new buildings that may have been designed deliberately to circumvent regulations.

These blocks are less than 18m (59ft limit) to be considered as high-rise buildings.

The minister of safety for buildings described efforts to "cut corners" as "shocking".

The Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017 resulted in the deaths of 72 people.

BBC Newsnight: Mr Jennings stated that he has seen examples of people deliberately creating and building structures below the threshold of 18m, or six floors. This is because they know that if they reach the threshold, they will have to install more complex fire security measures.

Mr Jennings said that the new buildings in the capital as an example of "gaming the system".

When asked how many new buildings in London were being constructed in order to skirt the rules, he responded that it was likely "hundreds or even thousands".

He added, "We are seeing about 60 percent of the building consults that come into fire engineering and some are ones where we're going backwards."

Two weeks ago, LFB said all but three of the recommendations made by the Grenfell Tower Inquiry will be in place by 2022.

Michael Gove spoke Monday to the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee in which he said that "We collectively - some of us in local government, some in the private sector and some in the department - failed people at Grenfell and there are people who are in buildings where there's an increased risk."
