It's an amazing idea It's a great idea, clearly. It's a brilliant initiative. Forums I would have slain millions to have something even remotely as engaging or videogame-like than Minecraft. Minecraft was used in the school curriculum as a teaching tool. It would be wonderful to see the PCGN style manual and policies could be taught using blocks instead of a bunch of terrible words. As always, the most important thing is to make people enthusiastic about learning so that they enjoy learning and absorb it.
There's a lengthy FAQ with additional details, including the amount it will cost. It's sitting at $5 per year per user, which doesn't sound like a lot until you think about the number of schools, especially American ones, and how broad the applications of this could be. Although I wouldn't expect Microsoft to give it away at no cost, given that these kids will be using it in their classes, there are certain to be many benefits.
Schools aren't the only ones who will have access, with libraries and museums able to buy copies to use as they will. There's a wealth of custom-designed resources already becoming available, with more to come in the event it proves successful. The two billion dollars are looking quite well spent in the event that things continue on this road.
