Minecraft creator on Microsoft deal: 'It's about my sanity'



Shortly after it was announced that Microsoft was buying Minecraft developer Mojang for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn), the Swedish developer behind the title Markus Persson - known as Notch - posted his own personal statement on the purchase. We've reproduced it in full below:



I'm leaving Mojang



I do not consider myself a game developer. I make games to have enjoyment and because I enjoy programming. But I don't want to make them huge hits. I also don't intend to make a difference in the world.



Minecraft was a huge hit. People tell me that it has changed their lives. It wasn't an accidental. It's flattering, and it's interesting to slowly get in the public spotlight.



It was quite a while ago that I made the decision to stop Minecraft development. Jens was the perfect person to lead the project and I was eager to try new ideas. At first, I failed by trying to make something massive again, but since I decided to stick to small prototypes and fun challenges, I've had lots of fun at work.



Although I wasn't sure what I could do to make it to Mojang, where work actually was being done I was told by people that I was important to the culture and I decided to stay.



I was home with a bad cold a couple of weeks ago, when the internet exploded with rage against me due to some kind of EULA situation that I had nothing to have anything to do with. I was confused. I didn't understand. Minecraft servers I tweeted this to express my frustration.



Then I went through the This is Phil Fish YouTube video and realized that I didn't feel the same connection I thought I had with my fans. I have become an image. I don’t want to be an object of ridicule. I don't want to be accountable for something I don't know about. That I don't want to work on. I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not an executive director. I'm a nerdy computer programmer who likes to have opinions on Twitter.



As soon as this deal is completed I will quit Mojang and go back to doing Ludum Dares and other small web-based experiments. If I make an error and it gains traction, I'll probably drop it right away.



In light of the fact that the public image of me already has a skewed image, I don't expect to avoid negative comments by doing this, but at least now I won't have a need to read them.



This is in direct contradiction to many of my public statements. I don't have a good answer to that. I'm also aware that many of you were using me as a symbol of some perceived struggle. I'm not. I'm a human being and I'm right there with you.



You are my best friend. You're incredible. Thank you for making Minecraft what it is today. There are just too many of us and I am not responsible for something as huge as Minecraft. In one sense, it's belong to Microsoft currently. It's been part of your lives for a long time and will remain yours.



It's not all about the money. It's about my mental wellbeing.
