Inhabitat's Week in the Green: Wind Farms, Algae Power and an Airplane made from Hemp

Inhabitat's friends recap the week's top green developments and news on clean technology each week. It's called the Week In Green.

Highways are big, black surfaces that absorb lots of sun. It makes more sense to have them powered by solar energy. That's what designer Daan Roosegaarde was thinking, and now he's making it possible. Heijmans Infrastructure and Roosegaarde teamed together to install solar-powered glowing lines along a Dutch highway. The test was a success and is expected to expand to other regions of the country. Masdar is also building a 50-megawatt windfarm for the Sultanate of Oman. It will be the largest in the Gulf states region. The wind farm will generate enough clean energy to power 16,000 homes and it will prevent 110,000 tonnes (121,254 tons) of carbon dioxide from burning per year. In the UK, Primrose Solar is teaming up with Solarcentury to construct a 48 megawatt solar farm in Portsmouth. They are hoping to make it the most eco-friendly ground mounted solar farm in all of the world. Are you convinced that algae is just green slime. You're wrong It can power everything, from the lightbulb to a whole city. Maimers's blog Here are some of the most innovative algae-powered designs that could change the world.

A few years ago, BMW, Daimler and scientists at the Technische Universitat Munchen announced plans to work together to create an affordable and safe electric car. The Visio.M is a small electric car with two seats that weighs around 900 pounds . It's scheduled to be presented to the public at the eCarTec trade show in Munich. Inhabitat was also among the two teams that completed the challenge of driving 834 mph using one tank of diesel fuel in the 2015 Audi A3 TDI. This proved that it was possible to travel from Albuquerque New Mexico to San Diego without having to refill the tank. According to a couple from California, the world's first hoverboard is now available. The pair claims that they've created a working hoverboard that utilizes electromagnetics to float just a few inches off the ground. Vello Bike, a high-performance folding bicycle, has been created for urban commuters. It takes only one push to fold and then roll back into place. This makes it simple to transport the bike by public transport or to store it in a storage area. Hempearth, a Canadian company, is working on the world's first plane made of hemp. The company hopes that the plane will be flying next year.

While 3D printing has lots of potential in the design world, it also poses some issues for law enforcement agencies because it can allow individuals to make their guns at home. A 28-year-old Japanese citizen was sentenced to three days in jail this week for 3D printing. He was found guilty of making two guns in his home and sharing a video showing how others could do it. And Inhabitat was there when New York City held its first ever getgeeked conference last week. Take a look at the latest technological innovations on display including 3D-printed pens as well as tablets that have built-in projectors.

Elsewhere 3D printing is established in the field of medical and aerospace technology but it's just beginning to gain traction as a viable construction technique. The World's Advanced Saving Project presented a portable 3D printer that can create homes from clay fibers, mud, and mud at Maker Faire Rome. The group plans to bring the technology in some of the world's most deprived regions. Design duo Micaela Collella and Maurizio Barbario have created plans for a prefabricated wooden home. The foundation is constructed of an innovative steel and can be completely recycled. Philippe Starck, a French designer, recently teamed together to construct a brand-new solar- and wind-powered house. The two-story home produces 50 percent more energy than it consumes.

Many of our readers are designing Halloween costumes for their children. But very few can match this incredible dad's glowing LED stick costume that makes Zoey appear like a glowing Minnie Mouse. If you're still at a loss for Halloween costume ideas and want to do something gadgety take a look at our fantastic images of human iPhones Androids robots, and Minecraft characters here.
