Minecraft is such a popular cultural phenomenon that it was supposed to have its own three-day event in September, complete with interactive exhibits, co-op and competitive gameplay, live entertainment, panels and merchandise. Tickets to the first Minecraft Festival in Orlando were set to be available this week. ReedPop is also the company that manages New York Comic Con and San Diego Comic Con -- has announced that the event will be delayed by a whole year due to the coronavirus epidemic. Even though the event was months away and the outbreak is likely to be resolved by then the producers, partners, and exhibitors have encountered difficulties when it comes planning the event and ensuring that attendees have a good time.
Minecraft Live will continue to be available for fans. The stream will continue as scheduled and will be updated with the latest Minecraft news as well as features and behind-the- scenes views of the upcoming projects.
This announcement is no surprise given the number of conventions and events which have been cancelled or delayed due to coronavirus-related concerns. However, it seems odd that ReedPop and Mojang -- Minecraft's developer -- announced the convention just one week ago, while COVID-19 was at top of mind. It was a wise decision to cancel the event before tickets went on-sale and before people had made travel arrangements. This has saved a lot of hassles.
