You could be able to describe the Deepworld if you put some gaming terms in a hat, then pulled them out one at a and then arranged them. It's a 2D, steampunk post-apocalyptic sandbox game with Minecraft-style creation, and block graphics that allow players access to a quite varied and vast world of games. Deepworld is a game that sounds too good to be true to its promises however the creators Bytebin (consisting of three players who have a ton of experience in server architecture, but not as much in game development and design) are aware that they're promising a lot.
But the version they kindly showed me at GDC last week certainly lived up to that promise at least as two characters roaming around the world together. Deepworld's graphics might not look stunning on the screen (they are... "stylistic" according to some) however, you'll discover an appeal in the world as you explore further. The game's beauty was revealed after the construction of a shelter with lanterns and pools of light.
There's a lot of beauty in the various mechanics too, though. The game's creator describes it as "a game that is based on a kind of scarcity", which refers to all the resources available in this arid world. You can find lava when you dig down. This produces steam that can be then transferred to pipes and utilized to power technology. There's a crafting system however, unlike Minecraft (where items need to be discovered and built), the game basically just offers up a menu of what's available to construct using the various resources you've gathered.
The interface is nice as well -- you can create whatever you want using the cursor on the Mac version, and although the iOS version is still under development ("There's some kinks to be found with touch," Bytebin says) the ability to "draw" your designs on the iPad's screen would be very nice.
The biggest problem with Deepworld probably isn't in the game itself, but It'll probably be with maintaining the servers. no place no name no number The title is divided into 1200x800 block "zones", and the developers hope to restrict these zones to a limited number of players. They could also charge players to modify or save these zones. But there will be an element of meta-gaming in "improving the ecosystem" of each zone, so it's not hard to see that Bytebin could face problems in the event that the game proves to be uber popular, in keeping its servers afloat.
Bytebin is aware of the issue (and also, the team's background is in running large servers for corporate software, so they have an opportunity to win at the very least), but we'll see how they fare when the game goes for an open beta later this year. Alpha is scheduled to begin "in the next few weeks," and there's a beta signup for the game available today. Deepworld is a fascinating game and is a game we'll probably be happy to play on Mac and iOS.
