The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, is opened as part a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles the capital.

The tunnel links the paths between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. The southern entrance is located in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban, and the northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem, about half a mile close to the Kerem junction.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Michael, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and a slew of cyclists participated in a ceremony to officially open the tunnel's 2.1-kilometer-long length.

Jerusalem was once a popular tourist attraction because of its rich history. Elkin said that the present tourism industry is one of Jerusalem's treasures from the past and incorporates modern day tourism. "The inauguration (of [this] tunnel project is a further step in the growth of Jerusalem as well as it's transformation into a sought-after tourist city for all sorts of audiences throughout Israel and around the world."

The project was financed by the Elkin's Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stated that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is an essential tool for achieving the goal to transform the concept of transportation throughout Jerusalem."
