Australian CDN company peakhour.io said the latest downtime that affected major companies underscored the possibility that anyone could be affected by a network failure.

"Many CDN providers also offer cyber security services that block attack traffic near where it's originated. This stops it from reaching the target.



Hackers are often attempting to shut down websites and apps by employing an attack technique known as DDOS – distributed denial of service. This is where they cause a massive increase of traffic at specific weak points within a network to overload it.



He said, "Akamai is a venerable and well-respected company, but as we've seen two times in the last week, outages can happen for anyone.



"The the fact that so many major organisations and the critical services they offer across Australia are all down simultaneously, regardless of the reason is a signal that there is a pressing need to redeploy.



'Companies routing their traffic through a third party, whether it's a CDN, DDOS protection, or otherwise, all need a Plan B, just like any other vital element of their IT infrastructure.
