The UK's Top Q0 Video Games

In April, we also witnessed the 14th BAFTA Games Awards, which examined the "outstanding creative achievements" of the video game industry in the year 2017. Five awards were awarded to Ninja Theory LTD, British creators, for their game Hellblade. They included British Game, Artistic Achievement, and Game Beyond Entertainment.



OnBuy.com is a British marketplace and seller of videogames, analysed data from a UK Interactive Entertainment map and discovered that Britain has released 19,617 games to date. As expected, London is the city that has released the most video games in the UK and the capital has produced about 29% of the games released in Great Britain (about 5,763). Manchester came in second with 533 games.



20 million of the population of the UK aged between 6 and 64 (that's a whopping 42 percent) are avid gamers and, according to the Interactive Software Federation of Europe (ISFE), UK gamers spend the most time per week, compared to players in France, Germany, and Spain with 8.9 hours gaming a week (compared to 6, 8.1 and 6.2 hours respectively).

Although it's not an exhaustive list, but here is a pick of 10 top games that have come from Great Britain:



Grand Theft Auto Series: The series was developed in Scotland by Rockstar North. The series has been critically acclaimed, has sold over 250 million units. In fact, it's the fourth-highest selling video franchise of all time, British newspaper The Telegraph has ranked the video game franchise among the top exports from Britain.



Batman Arkham Series Based on DC Comic's Batman Arkham Series, the Arkham Series video games were created in London by Rocksteady Studios. The first Arkham Series was released in 2009. The series' success earned it a place in the Guinness book for world records, for the "Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game Ever", for both Arkham Asylum and Arkham City.



Sea of Thieves: Released worldwide on the 20th of March 2018 Sea of thieves was developed in the town of Twycross by the developers at Rare. The game allows players to take on the role of a pirate sailing the seas and complete missions. Sea of Thieves was the most sold game Rare have made since they first began recording sales. It has also been the 8th best-selling game of 2018 to date.



Forza Horizon Series: Developed in Leamington Spa by Playground Games, the Forza Horizon series has enjoyed worldwide success since the initial game's release in the year 2012. Every game in the Horizon series has received an Metacritic score of 85/100 or higher. In December 2016, the series has made over US$1 billion at retail which makes Forza one of the top grossing video game franchises.



Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice: Earn five awards at the 2018 BAFTA Games Awards, Ninja Theory's Hellblade was created in Cambridge. The dark fantasy action adventure game was a commercial success; in fact it was the top-selling game on Europe's PlayStation Store for the month of its release.

Sniper Elite: The tactical shooting game series Sniper Elite was actually developed in Oxford by Rebellion. The series has sold more than 10 million copies since 2005 when the first game released. The gaming company, Rebellion Developments, has even published a novel that is based on the game entitled Sniper Elite: The Spear of Destiny.



Burnout Series: The multiplatform Burnout series was created by Criterion Games, Guildford, UK. The Need for Speed series is another game that is popular with the British gaming company. Both of these series are racing video games- an genre that Criterion spokesman Alex Ward stated they were "steering away from".



Crackdown 2: This open world action-adventure game may have been released by Microsoft Game Studios, but it was developed in Dundee by Ruffian Games. The Crackdown series is believed to have had a profound influence on the open-world genre, with Den of Geek's James Hunt of described the first Crackdown game as "the first in a line of original, postmodern-style superhero games on games consoles and great fun too."



LEGO Series: Not satisfied with their immense success with children of all ages, as building blocks, LEGO has conquered the video game world with their series , which includes games like Lego Harry Potter Years 4 and Lego: The Lord of the Rings. Traveller's Tales (or TT Games) was created in Bolton, created the series.



Football Manager: This collection of football-related games, also known as Worldwide Soccer Manager in North America was developed in London by the company Sports Interactive. The game series was well-received, and is very loved by its players. There is a lively online community. The series has sold more than 15 million copies across platforms since its association with Sega, the Japanese giant.
