If you keep a close watch on the App Store (or have a quick RSS feed to follow it) you may have noticed an app called Minecrafted up there on Monday morning. It's an Minecraft client for iOS and is a new version of the extremely popular indie game that is able to played on an iPhone and can connect to real Minecraft servers. It is not a good idea to rush to download it. The app has been removed from the App Store and you'll receive an error message if you attempt to locate it on the US store.
What's the deal? TUAW reached out to Trevor Wilkin, the app's creator. He explained that his original plan was for the client to be created, then submitted to Apple and then ratified by Minecraft before it was made live. Apple took it down immediately it was a complete disaster, and Wilkin says he "pretty pretty freaked out and removed from sale as quickly as he could." He's not sure if the application is authentic since it's completely original code as per the description. But, it's likely that he reverse engineered some things to make it compatible with current servers or versions of the game.
To us, Wilkin sounds innocent enough. He says that Wilkin has "no intention of harming the brand and just wanted to present a useful tool. I'm hoping to find an official solution that doesn't put anyone at risk. We're hoping also -- having Minecraft up and running officially on iOS would be a nice benefit for iPhone users and fans of the game that is so popular.
