Avanos Medical Recalls The Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System
Avanos Medical (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) has announced that it is recalling Cortrak*2's enteral access system. The recall was announced because of injuries to patients and death from misplaced nasoenteric/nasogastric tubes. These injuries include respiratory failure, pneumothorax (collapsed lung), perforation (a hole in the wall of the lung, esophagus or bowel) as well as pneumonia. an effusion of the pleura (excess fluid that has accumulated between the chest cavity and the lungs).

Avanos Medical has described a plan to provide users with new labels, which will confirm the proper placement of nasogastric and nasoenteric tubes prior to use.

Avanos is the second alert issued by the FDA has issued regarding intra-oral feeding tubes. In February, the FDA issued a caution to healthcare professionals and parents about the risk of strangulation when children use feeding tubes. Two instances have been reported of strangulation of children who received a feeding tube that was wrapped around their necks.
