Hacker group LulzSec the same group that has previously targeted Sony and Nintendo in the past, has posted that it's committed three distributed denial of service attacks on gaming companies , shutting down EVE Online's Tranquility server Minecraft's multiplayer services, and the Escapist Magazine's website. minecraft servers EVE Online's CCP has confirmed both the outage and the attack. The Escapist website is unavailable at present and Minecraft creator Notch claims that the site was down, but that service has been restored.
LulzSec hasn't revealed the reason behind the attacks just yet, but we can only guess, as they say, "for teh lulz."
Update: Riot Games' League of Legends servers were also targeted by the group. The login screen of the game displays a message indicating that the server is busy. However Riot Games hasn't yet confirmed this information.
Update: Statement from CCP following the break. EVE Online seems to still be down.
At 17:00 GMT today, CCP became aware of a distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS) attack against the EVE Online cluster and web servers.
Instantly, these services were immediately taken offline. In addition, all of CCP's infrastructure was disconnected from the public Internet.
The CCP Security team is conducting an exhaustive investigation to determine exactly what transpired and, if so the impact could be, and, most importantly and foremost, ensuring that the personal information of our customers is secure.
More details will be made public when it becomes available.
