Microsoft is expanding its world of Minecraft into a new action adventure game called Minecraft Legends. minecraft server list The game will be released in 2023. It will ask players to explore Minecraft as it is being taken over by a nefarious force.
Mojang studios, part of Microsoft who creates Minecraft, described this new game as a familiar, but in many ways, a brand new experience that focuses more on strategy and combat. The original Minecraft game, launched in 2011, challenges players to build and explore, while occasionally fighting off zombie-like creatures.
"You are at the center of every battle you take on, fighting alongside your allies while giving them direction," Microsoft said, in an announcement that teased the game. Microsoft announced that it had a partnership with Blackbird Interactive, which also developed the upcoming space strategy game Homeworld 3.
Just the fact that Minecraft Legends comes from a popular game doesn't guarantee its success, though. Minecraft itself may be one of the most played video games ever made, up there with Tetris, Super Mario Bros. and Grand Theft Auto. However, its attempts to expand beyond the popular formula have been intermittent.
According to Metacritic, Minecraft Dungeons was an action-adventure-style video game that was influenced by Minecraft. It received mixed reviews two years ago. Another CNET corporate partner, GameSpot, gave the game a "good" review, noting that the biggest disappointment was that Minecraft Dungeons focused on fighting monsters instead of offering a fresh twist on the formula used by its name of building a world. GameSpot's Steve Watts stated that the game doesn't change our expectations of what games can be. Instead, it's relying on its own popularity.
Microsoft announced Minecraft Legends at its annual summer video game showcase, which is being held online this year. The game will be released for Xbox, PC, and cloud gaming next year.
