Mojang's breakout hit Minecraft was ranked second in an official list by Google of the most popular YouTube search terms of 2014. The game ranked right behind the word "music" in terms of search frequency.
According to Google, "Minecraft" was searched more often on YouTube in 2014 than "movies". PewDiePie is a popular gaming character was also among the top searched terms on YouTube in 2014. This was due to queries for Disney's Frozen and also for musicians Drake and Beyonce.
Google reports that searches and engagement for gaming-related content are rapidly rising, even though many surveyed users don't necessarily identify as gamers. YouTube videos in the "Gaming” category were on the Top 10 Most Popular Lists of Google Search on a variety of days in October 2014.
"A Google Consumer Survey fielded in October 2014 of those who reported watching gaming videos on YouTube found that only a small portion of this group (37 percent) consider themselves gamers"" the report states. "When asked why they watched games, the majority of viewers said it was for entertainment and fun as well as learning new strategies or learning tips.

The report continues: "We also wanted to discover the reasons why people watch videos from creators like PewDiePie and SkyDoesMinecraft. Many of the fans responded, "Because they are hilarious!" These videos were also considered stand-up comedy. An up-and-coming gaming creator summed the interest in the video with the following analogy: 'You don't have to play soccer to enjoy it on television.'"
