Minecraft creator on Microsoft deal: "It's about my mental health'



The day after it was announced that Microsoft was buying Minecraft Mojang, a developer of the game, for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn) The Swedish developer behind the title Markus Persson - known as Notch released his own personal statement regarding the purchase. We've reproduced it in full below:



Mojang has left me



I don't consider myself to be a game developer. I create games for fun, and because I love games and I enjoy programming however I don't create games with the intention of them becoming huge hits and I don't attempt to change the world.



Minecraft certainly became a huge hit and people are telling me that it's changed games. I never intended for it to do that. MY CMS It's flattering, and it's fascinating to slowly be in the public spotlight.



It was a long time ago that I decided to stop Minecraft development. Jens was the perfect person to lead it, and I wanted to try something new. Although I tried to expand it again at first but was unsuccessful. But, I've chose to stick to small prototypes, interesting challenges, and I have had so much fun doing my work.



Although I wasn't sure how I would be able to fit in to Mojang, where actual work was done, people told me I was important for the culture and I decided to remain.



A few weeks ago I was suffering from a severe cold at home. The internet went wild with hate about me due to an EULA situation that I was not in. I was confused. I didn't understand. I posted this frustration on Twitter.



Later on, I watched the This is Phil Fish video on YouTube and realized I didn't have the connection with my fans that I believed I had. I've become an image. I do not want to be a symbol accountable for something that I don't know and do not want to work on, that constantly comes back to me. I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not a CEO. I am a geeky computer programmer who enjoys sharing my thoughts on Twitter.



As soon as this deal is completed, I will leave Mojang and go back to doing Ludum Dares as well as small web experiments. If I make an error and it gets traction, I'll probably drop it immediately.



Considering my public image already is a bit skewed I don't anticipate to avoid negative feedback by doing this, but at least now I won't feel a responsibility to read them.



This is in direct contradiction to my public statements. I don't have an answer to that. I also know that many of you used me as a symbol of some perceived struggle. I'm not. I'm a human being, and I'm right there struggling with you.



You are my best friend. You're all amazing. Thank you for making Minecraft what it is today. There are just too many of us and I can't be accountable for something as large as Minecraft. It is Microsoft's property now in a certain sense. In a much bigger sense, it's belonged to all of you for a long time and that's not going to change.



It's not about money. It's about my sanity.
